Gardening with the lodge

30th June 2022J Riley

This term we introduced the children to their natural world. We planted vegetables, flowers and seeds. We supported the children, giving them the information they needed to look after the plants and flowers and explained how they will change over time. The children have had such fun helping to look after them and talking about the changes they have observed week after week. They are very proud of what they have achieved, as are we. This week the children picked the spring onions. We smelled them, touched them and talked about how they had changed from a tiny brown bulb. We offered the children to taste them and they weren’t very keen, so we explored them in other ways, such as adding them to our home corner and painting with them.

Next to pick is our potatoes and watch as the pumpkins start to grow from little green bulbs into big round orange pumpkins.

What the Koala’s did this week WB 16th May 2022

24th May 2022J Riley

The Koala’s have had a very busy week this week. We have been learning about different rhyming words, we have read stories at small group time looking for rhyming words. We took part in a game where we splatted the words we thought that rhymed like cat and hat, house and mouse, three and tree. The children worked really hard sounding the words out and identifying words that they thought rhymed.

We also explored some new outdoor equipment and how to use it safely talking about what the items were called and how we could use them. Next the fun part trying them out some of the children worked together to play games with the objects while others showed how they could be individually used.

There has been lots of investigating going on outside and in forest school so this was extended to our tuff tray where we used magnifying glasses to identify some creepy crawlies hiding in the soil.

We finished our week making yummy pizzas which the children have been really looking forwards to doing. We talked about how we used the cutlery and what toppings we could put on top. The children loved eating them after Miss Storey cooked them in the oven.

What the koalas have been up to….

4th May 2022J Riley

WB 25th April

This week in the Koala group we have enjoyed being back in forest school we investigated some of the small creatures in our outside area. Using the magnifying glasses, we found a big wasp on our hut. The children explored the mud kitchen making hot chocolates and mud cakes filling and emptying with the soil and water. Some of the children found worms in the sand pit watching as they wriggled around.

We used our skills to explore some measuring equipment and measured objects of different sizes comparing it to the story Goldilocks, using big medium and small.

To finish the week the Sunshine made an appearance and we enjoyed exploring outside, helping Mrs Wright to plant a raspberry plant and dig in our allotment.

Easter time in the lodge

8th April 2022J Riley

We have been so busy in the lodge exploring Easter activities. We have had yellow and green rice out with chicks, nests, bunnies and sheep in. We put out eggs too so we could make shakers and catch the chicks. In the home corner we have had our Easter party bags and plates and the children have enjoyed making eggs and collecting the shopping for each other.

We were so lucky that the Easter bunny visited us nearly everyday, leaving lots of eggs for the children to find. We took turns to collect the eggs and found each one had chocolate eggs inside.

It’s time for us to say bye to some of our friends who are moving up to the big nursery. We will miss them.

The children have noticed signs of spring in our nursery garden and Forest School.  At small group time, the children carefully used fine brushes coupled with green and yellow paint as they carried out their individual observational painting.  As they painted, we talked about the different parts of the daffodil – stem petals and trumpet.  We also discussed how to take care of flowers and plants to help them to grow.

We have played with the parachute at group time to promote working together as a team, sharing ideas and suggestions as to how we could move the parachute in different ways, The sand in the tuft spot has provided the children to use their knowledge and imagination, and explore concepts such as filling, emptying, pouring , watching the sand flow from colanders and funnels onto hands, and talking about how this feels
