Cold, Damp and Mould – Key Facts
Recent data shows that cold, damp and mouldy homes contributed to almost 40,000 NHS hospital admissions in 2024, with links to serious respiratory and cardiovascular illness. These conditions can worsen asthma, trigger breathing difficulties, and lead to infections such as pneumonia, which has risen significantly in recent years.
Independent: Cold, damp and mouldy housing thought to be behind 40,000 hospital admissions as UK faces fresh cost of living crisis Simple habits at home—such as opening windows when showering to reduce moisture—can help lower the risk of damp and mould developing, protecting children and families from avoidable illness.

Practical Tips Children Can Learn and Do
Let Fresh Air InOpen a window for a few minutes after showering or bathing to let steam escape.
Encourage them to ask an adult before opening windows in winter, but explain why it helps reduce condensation.
Close Doors When Bathing or Showering
Dry Clothes SafelyTeach children not to dry clothes on radiators if possible—explain that it puts moisture into the air. Instead, they can help find a suitable drying spot or remind adults to use good ventilation. ️
Keep Rooms Warm Where Possible
Spot and Report Problems EarlyTeach children what mould looks like so they can tell a trusted adult if they notice black spots, damp patches or a musty smell.
Wipe Away CondensationOlder children can help wipe water from windows and windowsills in the mornings, preventing moisture build‑up.
Keep Furniture Away from Cold WallsShow them how leaving a small gap between beds, sofas or cupboards and the wall helps air to circulate.

We make our own dough to play with in nursery every week. We know how to follow the recipe now and make sure we put the right amount in to make the best play dough for us to use in nursery! This activity has so many benefits.
- Mathematical knowledge – counting how many spoons of flour is needed, how much water is needed
- Physical development – Fine motor control of put in the flour and mixing
- Understanding of the world – Looking at similarities and differences when we add something to the process
This week we have been learning about the life cycle of a frog. We investigated the frog spawn and slowly over the week they grew into tadpoles. I wonder what will happen next?

The Children’s Tooth Brushing Guide
We developed our gross motor skills , such as running, jumping ,yoga and warm up fitness exercises help children build strength, balance and coordination.
We developed our fine motor skills, like holding a pencil, using scissors, or completing a jigsaw, support hand-eye coordination and prepare children for writing.
Developing these skills helps children grow in confidence, independence and overall physical development.
This term ,we explored how to keep ourselves healthy by making our very own fruit smoothie and we talked about how fruits help our bodies grow strong and give us energy.
The children took turns cutting the banana, practicing their fine motor skills and learning about safety. Each child then chose the fruits they wanted to add to the blender-blueberries, strawberries and bananas-making their own healthy combinations.
We loved how the colours changed when the fruits blended together.
The best part was enjoying the smoothie we had made ourselves- a fun and tasty way to learn about healthy eating and teamwork.
We had an amazing week in nursery this week, as we focused on emotional health and well being, introducing the children to our Colour Monsters who help to focus and support with feelings and emotions; we baked apple crumble (chopping the apples and mixing the crumble), and then shared it with our friends; painting rainbows; making cards, yoga and having fun! On Thursday we dressed in our colourful clothing and danced around to music with a rainbow of scarves in memory of our lovely and beautiful Mrs Worthington
Colour Monsters helped us explore our feelings.
We danced to all of our favourite songs!
We made rainbows to show our happy colours.
We used scarves to dance and wiggle and everyone laughed so much!
We made apple crumble….that made all of the teachers very happy!
We tried out yoga to feel calm.
