When one thing leads to another…..

14th June 2023J Riley

The children had a really good idea. It started with them jumping from the bench. Miss Riley introduced a hoop for the children to jump in to. The children started to discuss how far they could jump and who could go the furthest. We moved the hoop backwards to see who could jump the furthest. Miss Riley then suggested marking the children’s distance on the ground. This led to more discussion from the children around how far they could jump and who had longer legs. Following this there became an interest in mark making. The children began to mark their own distances and that of their friends. Quickly this led to the children mark making on the ground and then drawing around objects and each other. We discussed writing each other’s names and Miss Riley helped with this. The children then had a go at it them selves. This turned out to be a very busy afternoon with lots of learning taking place. And it all stemmed from jumping off the bench.

Chinese New Year Celebrations

9th February 2023J Parker

This week we have been learning all about Chinese New Year.  We listened to the story about the Chinese calendar, which involved a race between lots of creatures.  This year is the year of the rabbit.  We looked at similarities and differences between English and Chinese writing and copied some of the patterns.  We used chopsticks to sort multi-coloured pom-poms and different shapes.  We also used our hands to make hand prints, as we made a dragon, ready for our dragon dance.   We also tasted prawn crackers and some of us tried sweet and sour sauce and watched a dragon dance on the whiteboard!

Snow play

15th December 2022J Riley

The children in the lodge have experienced snow for the first time this year. We watched as it began to fall. We then played on the yard, making snow balls and snowmen and catching it with our hands.

We explored sledging on the hill. It was so much fun, we went so so fast!

Rainy Day

30th November 2022J Parker

We love rainy days. We got on our splash suits and wellies then headed outside to explore the rain! The children noticed rain collecting in one of our builders trays, they began to jump in and make very big splashes. We then decided to add some washing up liquid to see what would happen. The more we jumped and moved the more bubbles we got. Children then added lots of other things such as grass , leaves and stones and made some potions.

Jack Frost

30th November 2022J Parker

Jack Frost visited nursery and lots of our homes for the first time in a long time this week. The children discussed how cold it felt outside and how lots of grown ups needed to take ice off the cars before heading to nursery!

The children created their own role play using the animals and introduced more resources such as spoons to ”dig out the snow and free the animals”. Other children used the fake snow to make marks in with their fingers and also using tools such as paint brushes and lolly sticks.
