Caring for animals – stories for this week 23/5/16

By S Butler22nd May 2016

We have been caring for chicks and tadpoles this term, and we have learned so much.  Now we want to extend the children’s learning and further develop their care and concern for living creatures, so we are going to set up a Vet’s role play area in Nursery.  To get us thinking about animals, we are reading lots of animal stories, so this week’s books are all about cats and dogs.

All about frogs! This week’s stories – week beginning 18/4/16

By S Butler17th April 2016

The tadpoles in Nursery are getting bigger now, and there has been much excitement to see whether their legs are starting to grow yet or not.  We have been keeping a very close eye on them, using magnifying glasses to have a really good look.  Counting how many we have is proving to be quite tricky as they move so quickly now!

Our Story Times this week all have a froggy theme.  Here are the books we will be using.

Worms

12th April 2016J Parker

Our children at nursery are thoroughly enjoying this damp weather as they have been able to look for worms in the garden.  Not only have they been interested in how they move but also timing how long it takes for them to cross lines which the children have drawn on the floor with chalk.  Some children have been measuring them using unconventional methods e.g. “This one is longer than my boot!”

Ideas

Have a look in your garden and try to find some worms.  See who can find the longest or the shortest.  Try sorting them into fat ones and thin ones, quick worms or slow moving ones.

Stories for week beginning 29th February 2016

By S Butler28th February 2016

This week we will be thinking about Mothers’ Day, so all our stories all involve mothers: lost mums, busy mums, and harassed mums.  We’re sure you’ll identify with at least one of them!

5 minutes peace

owl babies

Our rhyme of the week is

5 Superheroes

5 super heroes ready to fly
Here comes the villain, Stop that guy!
This superhero can save the day.
Off he flies – up, up, and away!

Stories for the week beginning 8th February

By S Butler5th February 2016

This week we will be celebrating the Chinese Year of the Monkey with lots of different activities including ribbon dancing, exploring noodles and trying out Chinese writing.

Our stories are all about monkeys.

nightmonkeydaymonkey  ten little monkeys

monkey puzzle mo's smelly jumper

Our song of the week is all about Chinese New Year celebrations.

The song can be heard by clicking here.

Chorus:
(keep a rhythm patting hands together one hand up, then the other)
Gung Hay Fat Choy, Gung Hay Fat Choy
Sing Happy New Year, Gung Hay Fat Choy

1. The new moon tells us, exactly when
(hold up one hand in C shape for crescent moon)
To celebrate with family and friends (clap hands in rhythm)

2. Clean up the house and get out the broom (pretend to sweep)
Sweep out the old year, bring in the new

3. Bring out the apples, the oranges too (hold out one fist, then the other)
Their colors bring us joy and good luck too

4. The dragon dances, the lanterns light
(place hands together, and snake around )
The firecrackers light up the night
(alternate right and left fist out with fingers opening quickly to mimic shooting fireworks).
